Inspiration

My subjects are atmospheric landscapes, peaceful snowscapes, dramatic seascapes, colourful flowers and striking abstracts

“In my watercolours I try to capture the mood and essence of place rather than a photographic reproduction. My seascapes try to emulate the power of the sea. My Venice paintings often concentrate on architectural detail, but also I enjoy painting the romantic setting of a sunset or by moonlight.  The abstract expressionist canvases are about life journeys and they consist of texture and reflected light. These paintings have spontaneity whilst asserting a certain amount of control. Hints of subtle colour touch the glossy relief paint and my latest abstracts have a sparkling gem effect which change colour and move around the picture plane according to one’s viewpoint.”

The Artists from the past who inspire me and have influenced my work are:

Max Ernst with the hallucinatory quality of his frottage technique; the serene melancholy of Caspar David Friedrich’s landscapes; Turner’s magical atmospheric effects of light; the mysterious quality of Atkinson Grimshaw’s night-scapes; Wassily Kandinsky and Mark Rothko with their emotional and spiritual value of colour and lastly, but not least Jackson Pollock with his pourings and drippings, whose spontaneity I admire.
